Feature Comparison of Cloud-Based PaaS Versus In-House Servers

26 April 2016- 27 min read

The new platform as a service model (PaaS) is the next big change in the world of business applications.

In the old days (like 2 years ago), businesses would have to hire an IT guy, buy a server, install software, support the server and the software, manage backups, manage crashes, install updates, and more. Not to mention, there a lots of costs associated with all of this hardware and support.

Businesses needed a better way to store their data. so along came a new service called PaaS. The idea is that a big tech company like Salesforce or Amazon provides the hardware, software, and support, and the business pays a simple license fee per user to use the app hosted on that platform. The sole job of Salesforce is to make sure the technology behind the app works all the time. The technology therefore becomes a non issue for the business. Developers can then focus solely on providing business solutions and users can focus on doing their core jobs. It’s a wonderful thing!

As you can see, the benefits of a cloud based software far outweigh those of an in-house server, however, there are many things to consider when thinking about what server to use. If cost savings are your highest priority, cloud-based PaaS makes the most sense, but it's still always good to do your research.

Ask Your Vendor

When selecting a software, it's important to ask these questions about the platform.

  1. Can you see the status of your hardware live?.
  2. Do you have written hardware/server control and physical access policies?
  3. Do you have written backup and disaster recovery plans?
  4. Do you have 3rd party security certifications?

Technology can be confusing for sure, but it’s important to know the difference between the PaaS and an in-house server in order to make sure your business operates the most efficient way possible.
